CA apartment

The traditional workers’ housing, built in brick and tuff stone in the 1940s, is surrounded by an outdoor garden, placing the apartment in a green oasis in the midst of Rome. CA House is shaped by our understanding, use and re-use of two primary materials in particular: wood and stone. RSSAA works with materials through a critical approach to the sourcing, extraction, and consumption of resources when building and rebuilding spaces. We aim to work against the standardisation of elements within the building industry. On the occasion of CA House, the apartment was fully renovated with a focus on sourcing recycled building materials, such as terrazzo tiles and cement flooring. RSSAA created a bathroom floor entirely from marble scrap pieces and discarded stones, collected from local stonemasons. All wooden elements in the house were custom-designed. Acrylic paint was stripped from the walls, which were then treated with breathable lime mortar and paint. Two pendant lamps and a wall light were designed specifically for the house.
